Catalytic Converter Inspection Coverage

A catalytic converter inspection is a comprehensive assessment of the conversion efficiency and physical condition of this component at the heart of the exhaust emission system. We begin the process with a computer fault scan; in particular, we analyze catalyst-efficiency-below-threshold warning codes such as P0420 and P0430. By comparing the pre-catalyst and post-catalyst lambda (oxygen) sensor signals through live data, we measure whether the conversion rate has dropped below the manufacturer's threshold. With an exhaust back-pressure test we detect clogging caused by melting of the internal honeycomb structure, and we check the integrity of the honeycomb both visually and with temperature measurement. We share all findings with you in a report, clarify whether the source of the fault really is the catalytic converter or whether it stems from a sensor or combustion issue, and recommend the correct solution.

  • Computer fault scan and analysis of P0420 / P0430 catalyst efficiency codes
  • Live data comparison of the pre-catalyst and post-catalyst lambda (oxygen) sensor signals
  • Detection of internal clogging and honeycomb melting through exhaust back-pressure measurement
  • Conversion efficiency check by measuring the temperature difference between catalyst inlet and outlet
  • Inspection of the exhaust manifold, flange and gasket points for leaks and looseness
  • Verification of conversion performance by measuring emission values (CO, HC, NOx)
  • Distinguishing whether the fault is caused by the catalytic converter, a sensor or combustion
  • Detailed inspection report and an approval-based solution recommendation

When Is Catalytic Converter Inspection Needed?

If you notice any of the symptoms below, a prompt expert inspection is important.

Check Engine Light Is On

A check engine light that stays on continuously on the dashboard often points to a drop in catalytic converter efficiency.

Fuel Consumption Has Increased

A clogged catalytic converter raises exhaust pressure, the engine works harder and fuel consumption rises noticeably.

Loss of Pulling Power

Power choking, especially on inclines and under acceleration, indicates that a clogged catalytic converter is restricting exhaust flow.

Abnormal Smell From the Exhaust

A rotten-egg-like sulphur smell is a typical sign that the catalytic converter has lost its conversion efficiency.

Rattling Noise From the Exhaust

A rattle heard at idle or during acceleration is a sign that the internal honeycomb structure has broken.

Failed the Emissions Inspection

High CO or HC readings in the exhaust emissions test call for a catalytic converter inspection.

What Our Customers Said

A selection of real customer experiences.

“When my check engine light came on, another shop told me to replace the catalytic converter right away. I came here, they ran measurements and showed me that the problem was actually the oxygen sensor. I was saved from a needless big expense.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Catalytic Converter Inspection

Quick answers to your questions.

How do you determine that the catalytic converter is faulty?
We don't just look at the check engine light. Alongside the computer fault scan, we compare the pre-catalyst and post-catalyst lambda sensor signals and measure the exhaust back-pressure and the inlet-to-outlet temperature difference. These measurements show definitively whether the catalytic converter has actually lost efficiency.
Does a P0420 code definitely mean the catalytic converter must be replaced?
No. P0420 is a catalyst-efficiency-below-threshold warning, but its source is not always the catalytic converter. A faulty oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak or improper combustion can also generate this code. We first isolate the source and do not recommend unnecessary part replacement.
How does a clogged catalytic converter affect performance?
If the internal honeycomb structure melts or builds up soot, exhaust flow is restricted and back-pressure rises. As a result the engine can't breathe; pulling power drops, acceleration weakens and fuel consumption increases. The back-pressure value we measure clearly reveals the extent of the clogging.
Is it possible to bypass or remove the catalytic converter?
We do not perform such modifications. The catalytic converter is a mandatory component for emission control, and removing it legally requires replacement. We identify the source of the fault and inspect the component with the correct method to provide a lasting solution.
How long does the inspection take and do I need to leave the car?
A standard catalytic converter inspection, including the fault scan, lambda measurement and pressure test, takes an average of 45-60 minutes. In most cases it is completed while you wait. If a deeper emission analysis is required, we inform you of the time in advance and obtain your approval.
What kind of information do I receive after the inspection?
At the end of the work we provide an inspection report covering the lambda signals, exhaust pressure, temperature difference and emission values. The condition of the catalytic converter, the real source of the fault if any, and the recommended solution are explained transparently, so you can make your decision with full information.
