With short-distance city driving, the soot filter regeneration cannot complete on Multijet diesels; the DPF clogs, and overheating and power-loss warnings appear. Proper diagnosis and, when needed, pressurized cleaning are required.
Especially on the automatic transmissions of the Renegade and Compass, jerking at low rpm, clutch engagement delay and late gear changes occur. Oil quality, the mechatronics and the adaptation settings should be checked.
On diesel engines, the EGR valve and intake passages clog with carbon over time; this causes idle instability, a check engine light and reduced performance. It requires removal and cleaning or replacement.
On Multijet injectors, return leakage and poor spray patterns cause hard starting, jerking and black smoke. The faulty injector should be identified with a flow (leak-back) test.
In the all-wheel-drive system of the Compass and Renegade, the rear drive coupling (PTU) develops oil leaks and noise, leading to traction loss. It requires an oil check and overhaul of the unit.
Thermostat and water pump issues cause the engine to warm up slowly or overheat; this also negatively affects DPF regeneration. Sealing should be verified with a pressure test.
