On the Golf, the plastic housing and gasket of the water pump can leak over time. If the reservoir keeps losing coolant, the heater blows cool air, or the temperature gauge rises, a pump and thermostat inspection is essential.
On EA211 engines, a rattling noise lasting a few seconds at first start-up can indicate a loss of pressure in the timing chain tensioner. Have it inspected before the chain skips and causes serious engine damage.
