When Is Powershift Transmission Service Needed?

Shudder and jerking on take-off

When the vehicle shudders as if hopping while pulling away from a stop or under light throttle, this is the most typical sign that the dry-clutch friction discs have worn or that oil has contaminated the clutch.

Hesitation and delay during gear changes

If you feel sticking, slow response or a sudden jolt when the vehicle shifts up or down at low speed, the problem may originate from the clutch or the TCM.

Warning light on the instrument cluster

A transmission fault warning, a 'Transmission Fault' message, or the engine warning light coming on indicates that the TCM has logged a clutch/actuator error.

Roll-back at idle or on a hill

If the vehicle does not engage cleanly in D or R, a sensation of rolling back on a hill points to the clutch touch-point having been lost.

Abnormal noises and metallic rattle

My Ford Powershift transmission is shuddering, does the whole transmission have to be replaced?
No. Most shudder on the dry-type DPS6 is caused by worn clutch friction discs or oil that has contaminated the clutch. We first carry out computerized diagnosis, friction-disc measurement and a leak check; if the problem is in the clutch set, we renew only that. We do not recommend an unnecessary complete transmission replacement.
What is the difference between DPS6 and MPS6, and which one is in my car?
DPS6 is a dry dual-clutch and is generally used on the Focus and Fiesta in the lower torque class. MPS6 is the wet (oil-bath) type and is found on higher-torque models such as the Kuga. We identify your transmission type precisely based on your vehicle's chassis and specification data.
If only the TCM software is updated, will the shudder go away?
In some cases the TCM software released by Ford improves the clutch control strategy and reduces mild shudder. However, if the friction discs are mechanically worn, software alone will not be a lasting solution. We first measure the mechanical condition, then evaluate the software and adaptation together.
Is adaptation required after a clutch replacement?
Yes. When a new clutch is fitted, the TCM needs to relearn the touch-point (adaptation/calibration). If this procedure is not carried out, gear changes will remain harsh or the shudder will continue. We complete the procedure with the diagnostic tool and verify it with a road test.
Why does transmission oil contamination cause shudder?
On the dry DPS6, the clutch is designed to run dry. If the input-shaft seal or the mechatronic unit leaks, oil reaches the clutch friction disc, the friction coefficient is degraded, and shudder begins on take-off. For this reason, the seal and leak check is an inseparable part of the repair.
How long does the work take and do you provide a warranty?
The time varies with the type of fault; diagnosis is done the same day, and clutch renewal is generally completed within a business day. We provide a warranty on the original-OEM compatible parts we use and on our workmanship, and we share the process transparently at every stage.
